Abstract
The paper refers to the problems of rural areas in the Podunavlje administrative district in the Republic of Serbia. Depopulation, ageing population, neglected infrastructure are some of the issues in rural areas. Vicinity of big urban centres, such as the City of Kragujevac and the City of Smederevo, especially the metropolitan area of Belgrade, had large impact on development and demographic processes in these rural areas. The research includes rural settlements in three units of the local gov-ernment, which belong to the Podunavlje administrative district. The aim of the research is to present the current position of rural areas in the regional environment, through analysis of demographic, spatial, and socio-economic indicators, as well as specific changes that occurred between 2002 and 2011 Population Census. Results may contribute to better understanding of the potentials and limitations of rural areas and could be important for the further development of rural areas in this part ...of Serbia. In that context, some recommendations regarding sustainability are provided.
